
60th Anniversary of Notre Dame Baseball State Title
This spring marked the 60th anniversary of the first of two baseball state championship seasons for St. Patrick Catholic High School legacy school, Notre Dame. Led by Rodney Mattina ND ’60 on the mound (10-1), along with future national record holder, Anthony “Chris” Taranto ND ’61 (5-0), the Rebels went 17-1.
Taranto completed two of his career 12 no-hitters as a junior on the 1960 squad.
Batting wasn’t a struggle for the Rebels as seven players boasted a batting average above .300 and three players batted north of .400. The Rebels would score 172 runs in 18 games while only giving up 39. The average game ended in 9.5 – 2 win for the Rebels.
