Bishop’s Bell Game Returns
BILOXI- For the first time since 2019, the St. Patrick Fighting Irish football team will face off against Sacred Heart in the 2nd Annual Bishop’s Bell Game. The game was cancelled in 2020 due to a surge in Covid-19. School officials say they are excited to start the tradition back up.
“Catholic Education in our diocese has a wonderful and rich history,” Principal Dr. Matt Buckley said. “We are excited to continue the tradition of the Bishop’s Bell Game in competition with Sacred Heart High School.”
The rich history of Catholic education in the Diocese of Biloxi is an important asset. Our schools create a sense of place for students, their families, faculty, staff, clergy, and alumni. Our schools foster an environment where education, intentional discipleship, recreation, and faith formation help develop successful Catholic youth.
“We are excited to once again have an opportunity to participate in this game,” Head Coach Trey Bailey said. “Both schools look forward to the matchup annually, and I believe events such as this provide an excellent opportunity for the for the Catholic Diocese of Biloxi to come together as one.”
Both teams will be playing for the “Bishop’s Bell”, a traveling trophy that formalizes a rivalry in what has become a big game for Biloxi diocesan schools.
Senior Linebacker Jameson Thriffiley is excited to start the season off with a win. “This will be our third chance to prove we will never lose the bell to Sacred Heart.”
“Coming together as Catholic schools to enjoy a football game is a great thing,” Dr. Buckley continued. “The Fighting Irish look forward to the WIN and bringing home the BELL!”
The Fighting Irish will travel to Hattiesburg for the Bishop’s Bell game. Tickets can be purchased at the gate. The game starts at 7 pm.
About the Bishop’s Bell: The 85-pound, iron bell has been painted in the St. Patrick and Sacred Heart colors. The bell will find its yearly home at the winning school’s campus.
