Congratulations to the Fighting Irish Cross Country boys and girls teams for winning the MHSAA State Championship in Jackson yesterday!

This is the first time both the girls and boys teams have won in the same year, and several members of both teams made the All-State Team, including: Cade Meyers, Dominic Patino, Dylan Middleton, Mason McCullough, Isabel Leatherman, Jordan Pete, Isabella Patino and Amelie Million!

“Our team started off this journey on June 11 with a realistic goal to win a Boys and Girls Cross Country title in November. Late August, the coaching staff formulated a plan for the rigorous challenge of running up and down the tough hills at the State Championship Race. Therefore twice a week, athletes and coaches meet at 6:30 pm for mile intervals at the hilly William Carey Campus north of the St. Patrick Catholic High School facility. Subsequently On Championship Day, the runners simply executed the coaching staff strategy flawlessly with no fear of failure or success. With all the expectations for this team, I am truly humbled to witness St. Patrick student/athletes continually perform at such a high level athletically as well as academically when the time arises for the ultimate challenge.” – SPCHS Cross Country Head Coach Tim McDaniel

Team Captain and SPCHS Senior Dylan Middleton said, “Winning a State Championship is a feeling like no other, but winning two years in a row is just crazy! Getting to finish my senior season with a team and coach that I love makes it that much better.”

Senior Jordan Pete said, “I am thrilled with how the Cross Country State Championship went. Having both the boys and girls win my senior year was amazing. It was a great way to finish my cross country running years at St. Patrick!”

“I can’t think of a better way to end my last cross country season than to make history by being the first St. Patrick team to win a state championship for both boys and girls in the same year! It has taken a lot of hard work, but our team had the heart to take it. It was great to see all of that hard work pay off,” said SPCHS Senior and Cross Country Team Captain Amelie Million.
