2010 Youth Legislature

Thursday, 11 November 2010  Story By: Mr. Jack Perry

Twenty-seven students representing St. Patrick Catholic High School attended the 51st Youth Legislature sponsored by the YMCA in Jackson, MS. Some students were legislators who wrote bills and tried to get them passed and signed into law by the Youth Governor. Other students acted as lobbyists and worked to get bills passed.

Our students had the opportunity to visit the State Capitol and sit in the chairs that Mississippi Representatives and Senators use. They worked in legislative committees and in the full House and Senate. Acting as legislators allows young people the opportunity to learn first hand how the legislative process works.

Jacob Holland was elected Sargeant at Arms. Christian Schloegel was elected President Pro-Tem of the Senate, and Meredith Gioe received an outstanding Representative award. Also representing St. Patrick were the following: Nick Cruso, Ali Cuevas, Stephen Diaz, Jackson Gandour, Jamie Gatlin, Reed Gioe, Addie Guida, Michie Guida, Gardner Hewes, Chelsea Howd, Sophie Kremer, Crissy Lawson, Myles McGill, Ben Pickard, Mary Rinker, Alex Rizk, Philip Rizk, Katherine Robinson, Shelby Schepens, Annie Taylor, Gray Taylor, Kaysha Taylor, Mellie Weitzel, and Brittany Wilem.

Sponsor Mr. Jack Perry and parents Mrs Jennifer Schloegel, Mrs. Peggy Taylor, and Mrs. Paula Hewes accompanied the students.
