Interact Club and Key Club participate in “Walking On Water” bridge walk
The Interact Club and Key Club joined forces for the annual WOW (Walk on Water) on Saturday morning at the Biloxi-Ocean Springs bridge. The club members ditched their Saturday morning sleep-in to arrive at 7 a.m. for the annual walk. The weather for August 26 was in perfect condition to run, walk, or jog. The walkers experienced a steady breeze throughout the entirety of the course, all 3.2 miles. Students conversed and got their exercise for the day while raising awareness for feeding the poor, so it was a win-win situation for all.
WOW is hosted by the Coast Young Professionals group, a branch of the Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce. CYP consists of people ranging from the ages of twenty one to forty that are involved in the world of business. Members engage in networking events, charity fundraisers, and professional development. Their booth was located on the Ocean Springs side of the bridge adjacent to the Ocean Springs Yacht Club. Olivia Munn, director of Coast Young Professionals, said that their organization first hosted this event nine years ago. It usually falls close to the anniversary of Katrina in remembrance of all the generous donations the Gulf Coast received in such a difficult time.
Munn referred me to the neighboring booth, Feeding Gulf Coast. Representatives Connie Whitaker and Haley Buchanan were passing out cold water bottles while accepting donations of canned goods. Whitaker explained that Feeding Gulf Coast is a partner of Feeding America. This national organization, along with the Gulf Coast chapter, serves those who are in hunger after experiencing disaster or personal crisis. They also distribute food to partner agencies such as soup kitchens and charitable organizations. Each canned good that the Key Club and Interact Club members brought were donated to Feeding Gulf Coast.
