Interact Club meeting promises future volunteer opportunities
St. Patrick Catholic High School’s Interact Club met on Wednesday, September 9. The meeting was held in the school auditorium from 3:00pm to 3:15pm. Interact Club co-sponsors, Mrs. Lawson and Ms. Moon, informed club members of upcoming events and opportunities.
Interact Club is a service club sponsored by Rotary of Edgewater, the local Rotary Club. Members step forward to volunteer in an effort to better their school and their community. St. Patrick’s Interact Club is comprised of over two hundred students from seventh through twelfth grade. St. Patrick Interact Club members can volunteer in numerous events scheduled throughout the year. The hours that a student works at an event are able to be used as part of the required service hours in the student’s religion class.
The meeting announced the dates for upcoming Interact Club volunteer opportunities. On Saturday, September 26, Interact Club members will join with Key Club members from 7am to 9am to take part in the Walk for the Poor. Members are asked to bring canned goods or to donate to St. Vincent de Paul. On Saturday, October 3, Interact Club members will stand up to heart disease by volunteering at the AHA Heart Walk. The event will take place from 7:30am to 11:00am at MGM Stadium in Biloxi. The next day Sunday, October 4, high school members of Interact Club will volunteer from 8:30am to 2:30pm at Hardy Court as part of Cruisin’ the Coast. Unlike other events, volunteering for Cruisin’ the Coast requires members to sign-up, since there are a limited number of available volunteer positions. Sign-ups will open on Friday, September 18, at 7:45am in the school foyer.
St. Patrick students enjoy taking part in Interact Club activities because the work that the club does is truly rewarding. St. Patrick senior, Joann Pates, said of Interact Club, “It is very good for the community and helps people.” The club’s activities are not about the members but rather the community as a whole. Mrs. Lawson, club co-sponsor, explains that the club is, “a high school Rotary Club whose motto is ‘service above self.’” Ms. Moon, club co-sponsor, emphasizes that Interact Club is a, “great way to get involved in your community.”
Currently, Interact Club t-shirts can be ordered from Mrs. Lawson or Ms. Moon for the price of ten dollars. This year’s shirt is the same as last year’s shirt. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, October 14, at 3:00pm.
