Mrs. Sutherlin awarded VFW State Teacher of the Year

Through a national awards program started in 1999, the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and its Ladies Auxiliary VFW have recognized teachers in grades K-12 for their promotion of citizenship education in their classrooms. Since its inception, the VFW has honored thousands of classroom teachers.

St. Patrick’s Mrs. Lucy Sutherlin was recently awarded the “VFW Teacher of the Year” award for the state of Mississippi.  The contest recognizes exceptional teachers for their outstanding commitment to teaching Americanism and patriotism to their students.

Based on the nominees submitted, VFW’s local chapters—called Posts—recognize one outstanding teacher in grades K-5, 6-8 and 9-12.  From there, the selected winners are forwarded to the state level.

Now, Mrs. Sutherlin will be considered for the national award contest by the VFW National Headquarters.
