Riojas selected to attend Coast Electric leadership workshop
Junior J.R. Riojas was recently selected and sponsored by Coast Electric to attend the Electric Power Association Youth Leadership Workshop. The conference held its thirtieth annual Youth Leadership Workshop on February 24-26 in downtown Jackson and is an opportunity for high school juniors from across the state to learn and improve on team building skills. At the workshop students studied many aspects of leadership and enjoyed a first-hand look at our state’s government in action. The workshop also included special presentations and speeches from Lt. Governor Tate Reeves and Governor Phil Bryant. Governor Bryant, a strong supporter of the program, spoke to the students and urged them to remain in Mississippi after college and focused on the remarkable opportunities that are present for Mississippians.
J.R. was one of six students to represent Coast Electric at the workshop and was also given the opportunity to advance to the next conference in Washington, D.C. The Washington youth tour will take place June 11-17 and is the Rural Electric Youth Tour. During the week, 1,700 students high school juniors will learn about cooperatives, rural electrification, and the city and government. The seven-day schedule is full of sight-seeing, including all of the major monuments and memorials.
J.R. enjoyed the conference and stated, “This was an excellent leadership experience and a great chance to build networks. I am very thankful that I was given this opportunity to represent Mississippi this June.”
Congratulations to J.R. for being selected for the conference and we wish you luck as you travel to Washington, D.C., this summer!
