SPCHS juniors Ben Hartery and Teal Salloum attend 12th Annual Statewide Youth Leadership Summit

SPCHS Class of 2020 members Ben Hartery and Teal Salloum attended the 12th Annual Statewide Youth Leadership Summit hosted by the Mississippi Municipal League last weekend. The event took place at the University of Mississippi, and the two attended as part of the City of Gulfport Mayor’s Youth Council.

The purpose of the Summit is to bring city officials and youth together to share their experiences of their programs and the impact made on the community. In addition, it establishes a forum where youth can interact and discuss issues and concerns that are important to them. As a result, the Summit has been organized to promote a fun environment for youth and city officials to learn and network with each other. Adults and students alike will walk away from the summit with knowledge of forming their own board program or expanding their current program to new horizons.

“This Summit was a unique experience. We went to Ole Miss and met a bunch of new people from throughout the State. Gulfport Mayor’s Youth Council had a high reputation to live up to at this leadership conference, and I think that we exceeded those expectations.” – Teal Salloum

The group led a breakout session about several topics, such as how to run a meeting, different offices within the municipality, and service projects the group has done this year. Projects include creating cards for the assisted living residents, volunteering for the daddy-daughter dance, and more.
