St. Patrick announces the Karen Herbert Memorial Scholarship
BILOXI, Miss. – Today, St. Patrick Catholic High School announces the Karen Herbert Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $500 for a current St. Patrick student for the 2021-22 school year.
The scholarship honors the life and legacy of Karen Herbert, teacher and librarian at St. John High School. The gift is made by her son, Mr. Billy Herbert SJ ’98, as a memorial scholarship. The scholarship fund is open to gifts with a goal of reaching $50,000 in honor of Ms. Herbert.
Karen Ann Herbert was born November 26, 1951, and passed away March 13, 1998. She began teaching history at St John High School in 1973 and continued teaching and served as the librarian until she passed away in 1998. She also sponsored the Mock Trial team and the Quiz Bowl team for many years. She loved creating memories with family and friends, and she made a lasting impact on the students she taught, as well as the faculty and staff in which she worked alongside.
“My mother was a vital part of St. John High School’s staff for many years and touched many students’ lives,” said Billy Herbert. “I am honored that St. Patrick is allowing me to continue to honor my mother’s memory through this memorial scholarship. She was big on creating memories, and I hope that each student at St. Patrick creates memories and keeps God first in their life. Thank you Dr. Buckley and St. Patrick High School for this opportunity to honor my mother and support Catholic education.”
“We are exceedingly grateful to Mr. Billy Herbert for creating the Karen Herbert Memorial Scholarship at St. Patrick Catholic High School,” said Principal Dr. Matt Buckley. “Through this scholarship, Ms. Herbert’s legacy and commitment to Catholic education at St. John High School will continue for many generations to come. What an honor it is to know Billy and have his unwavering support of St. Patrick!”
Eligibility for the scholarship is based on a minimum 3.0 grade point average and demonstrated financial need. Students who are interested in applying should view and submit the application at stpatrickhighschool.net/karenherbert. The priority deadline for the scholarship application is August 1, 2021.
