St. Patrick Catholic High School Senior Matthew Bisner awarded Top ALL-STAR Scholar in Mississippi

On Thursday, April 12, 2018, St. Patrick Senior Matthew Bisner was recognized as Top ALL-STAR Scholar in Mississippi based on his overall ACT score, his ACT sub scores and his GPA. As the Top ALL-STAR Scholar, Matthew will receive a $24,000 scholarship awarded at $6,000 per year. STAR scholarships are provided by the Kelly Gene Cook, Sr. Charitable Foundation, Inc.

Matthew said, “This award came as a complete surprise to me! To be included in the top 20 was humbling alone, but to be named the Top ALL-STAR Scholar is more than I could have ever imagined. Looking forward, I hope to use the scholarship to pursue volunteer, internship, and travel opportunities I would not have previously been able to consider such as those offered by the United Nations and NGOs.”

His selection for STAR Teacher, Mr. Orin Eleuterius, said, “There is no doubt that Matthew is very deserving of this award. Matthew is a highly motivated student, and this is one of the reasons for his academic success. Matthew did very well on the AP U.S. History test and that is an indication of his motivation to do well. Matthew is also a very well-read student. The knowledge that he has gleaned from his reading has been demonstrated by him in class discussions and by his comments in class. In addition to the above, Matthew’s behavior in class, his relations with other students, and his demeanor in general are very impressive. It has certainly been an honor for me to have been selected by Matthew as his STAR Teacher.”

The Mississippi Economic Council’s Student-Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) Program has saluted the academic achievements of the state’s outstanding high school students and teachers for more than 50 years. This year’s class joins more than 20,000 top scholars and leading teachers who have qualified for recognition in the STAR Program, the most prestigious educations program in the state.

STAR Students are seniors with the highest ACT scores (minimum 25) and scholastic averages (minimum 93) in their high schools. They are chosen from more than 300 public, private and parochial schools.

Five St. Patrick students were selected as STAR Students, and each chose a teacher to recognize as a STAR Teacher, including:

  • Student: Matthew Bisner — Teacher: Orin Eleuterius
  • Student: Tyler Jackson — Teacher: Bill Lee
  • Student: Jack McKee — Teacher: Mary Lawson
  • Student: Lauren Skinner — Teacher: Gail Trahan
  • Student: Richard Springer — Teacher: Susie Tavel

All five students were recognized as members of the STAR 30 Club, in which they achieved an ACT score of 35 or 36.

Congratulations to all students and teachers on your hard work and many achievements!
