St. Patrick Celebrates National School Counselor Appreciation Week
BILOXI, Miss – St. Patrick Catholic High School is celebrating National School Counselor Appreciation Week by recognizing our guidance counselor, Ms. Liz Wilkinson.
Wilkinson began her career in Catholic education back in 1979 as a student-teacher at Sacred Heart. Following stints at St. John and Mercy Cross, Wilkinson has served St. Patrick since its inception. She is a fundamental part of the day to day operations. As a guidance counselor, Wilkinson strives to make sure students are meeting their academic goals and stay on track to graduation.
“Ms. Wilkinson is an integral part of our faculty and leadership team; she is most caring and strives to help all students succeed,” Principal Dr. Matt Buckley said.
“Her experience and expertise have such a positive impact on our students. As I observe her work each day, I remain impressed by her kindness, warmth, and empathy. She has truly touched the lives of many students,” said Dr. Buckley.
Wilkinson also arranges college recruiters to come on campus, which allows students to learn more about their facility and what they have to offer.
“She sends us scholarships daily and always welcomes us into her office,” Teal Salloum ‘20 said.
“As a senior, she has made the process of applying for college and scholarships easy. While she may be a little crazy, she always has our backs,” Salloum added.
Along with her role as a Guidance Counselor, Wilkinson also teaches Dual-credit Psychology. This is the first year the course has been offered at St. Patrick. The course allows students to earn both a high school and college credit if the course is completed with a passing grade.
“Ms. Wilkinson really cares about psychology, and does extensive research to keep us up to date on what is changing in the field,” Kelsey Descher ‘21 said.
“Right now we are learning about self-esteem and stress. We have class discussions on how to handle it, so it’s not always something straight out of the book. She keeps it interesting,” said Descher.
